y question for today:
Are you investing in products or assets?
By products, I mean things like annuities, mutual funds, and life insurance products. Everybody in the financial markets has a product. They want to sell you a product that’s supposed to take you from point A (where you are in your investing life) to point B (where you want to be).
Financial products are sold by people who need to make money – as we all do, and I don’t have a problem with that. But do you know what you’re doing when you’re buying a product from someone who’s selling products as investment advice?
Then there’s assets. Tangible assets are real businesses and Real Estate. You can buy or invest in them; you can lend money or go into joint ventures. Investing in assets is the way to go, but it’s not easy. It takes learning about how to do it well and building connections with a network of people who are already doing what you want to do.
I get that you may be so focused on your career, paying off debt, or building your business or practice that the time is not now. And that’s okay. But you do need to start thinking ahead and building your tribe because at some point you will have to figure out how to orchestrate your own wealth. Tangible assets – business and Real Estate – are tried and true, but it is semi-active investing, not totally passive income.
You have to be involved in the orchestration of your financial future. Invest in “products” only to your own degree of risk.
