How Much is Enough?

I want to give you an anonymous case study today: This person is probably about 45-50ish, with kids at home and a combined household income of $850,000. He wants to get up to a yearly net of $1 million from his practice.

He’s working full-time, has some debt on his primary residence and some commercial Real Estate. He thinks he could probably retire now without reducing his lifestyle, but he wants to get to a net worth of $20 million first.

That’s a great goal, but is there a purpose behind it? Why does he need $20 million?

His personal goals are to stay active with his kids and get to travel – which he admittedly doesn’t make the time for right now. So what is he trading his dollars for then? He’s already halfway to his goal, with a net worth of $10 million. If you easily and passively get 10% on your money every year through your investments, what do you really need to amass $20 million for?

If you’re sacrificing the time that you could be giving to your family and to your kids, then why? Is it fear of not having enough money?

That’s the traditional financial model: you never know if you’ll have enough, so you’ve got to pile it up. But that’s a scarcity mindset, and that’s what I think he’s working off of. It’s kind of a sad story, and a mistake doctors so often make – working for a goal that makes no sense and sacrificing the best years of their life when they have their health and family still around them.

They could be making memories – but no, not till they’ve gotten to $20 million.

If they have $10 million and it’s hard to let go, it’s probably just fear. What we don’t know in life is what holds us back. At Freedom Founders, we help other dentists overcome similar issues, pushing hard and digging deep to find the real numbers that make sense. We’d love to talk to you, too!

To your freedom!

David

  1. I though David was talking about me here, then he mentioned the 20M goal, and I woke up 😁. But seriously how do you spend money on buying freedom of time, when earning/saving is all you know?
