Harness the Waves

I’m out by the ocean after one of my masterminds in Huntington Beach, California. Looking at the waves, you could think of the rip currents underneath as obstacles, barriers, or dangers to watch out for… Or you can learn to surf the waves and stay on top.

If you harness the wind and rip currents the right way, they can work with you instead of against you.

In our economy and industry, we have a lot of big waves. There’s actually more of a tsunami effect in the healthcare industry with insurance driving the commoditization of our industry. Corporate consolidation is driving out solo practitioners. And with so much debt at the individual, national, and corporate levels, there are rip currents brewing underneath the economy.

Way too many people are reactive, hate change, and just want to roll with the status quo. But it doesn’t work that way. You don’t need to be stressed out about life, but you need to know something that few people understand: positioning is everything.

Ask yourself: are you going to be the victim, sucked under by the rip current, or blown over by the tsunami? Or will you position yourself to harness their power? You’ve got to be nimble and adaptable – always willing to change your models in life or profession.

If you’re not willing to change those things, stuff that looks pretty innocuous today is going to suck you under and you’ll be left wondering what happened. You’ve got to get outside the box, outside the cave of your life and your practice, outside whatever you already do well. It’s a fact that today, most of you are on models that are dying.

So you’ve got to learn. If I were going to go out and surf today, I’d find someone who’s already done it to show me how to time the waves and get up there and balance on the board. Finding someone who’s already gone down the path, who understands what to look for on the horizon and can direct you how to do it, is key. Quit trying to do it all yourself!

You’ve got to figure out where the inflection points are in your life, business, practice, time management, and relationships. Learn how to elevate those points and harness the power of the waves and rip currents.
