The Power of Association
’m in beautiful Punta Mita, Mexico with a number of my good friends who do real estate together.
It's just a getaway for us, a place where we can come together, collaborate, and talk about models, strategies, and what's happening in the marketplace.
In my recently published book Own Your Freedom I wrote about the power of association and the fact that we have grown up thinking that it's all on us – that we have to be the one who does the work, gets the grades, builds the business, and makes it all happen.
To some extent that is absolutely true, but there is great power in leveraging associations. That is the power of your network. I often say your network is your net worth, meaning that if you took away all of my other assets – my money, my other cash flows, my business – and you let me keep the relationships that I’ve curated from over 40 years in business and investing…I could build back very quickly. Give me my relationships.
The time here in Mexico with my colleagues is really more about “think” time. It's not about tactics, and it's not even about strategies. It's about higher level thinking: Where do we go from here? Knowing that we have a lot of disruption and uncertainty in the marketplace, and a lot of volatility ahead, how do we position ourselves? Nobody has a magic crystal ball, but with the wisdom of the group, we can figure it out together.
No one has it absolutely dialed in 100%, but having a pulse on what's going on in the marketplace, in business, in real estate, or any economic sector is a jump ahead of what everybody else is doing.
My associations are where I get my genius. They’re really my best insurance policy for anything I have in life. Having a network really allows me to elaborate, collaborate, and leverage the best of the best.
So if you haven't figured out how to get to your next level, consider the fact that you may need to level up a little bit in your relationships. Find people that you can collaborate with, people who have gone down the road ahead of you. Don't be the smartest one in the room. It may feel good to your ego, but it’s not going to get you where you want to go.
