re you the smartest one in the room (i.e. the places, forums, and people you surround yourself with)?

If you’re the smartest one in your tribe, you’re making a big mistake.

Now don’t get me wrong, I want you to be diligent and improve yourself – to be knowledgeable and educated as much as you can. But if you think you know everything there is to know, it’s because you haven’t put yourself in rooms where you’re not the smartest one – which leads to a false sense of security.

My whole life, in all areas, I’ve tried to put myself in places where I was challenged to do better by people who had gone down the road ahead of me. And the desire to be challenged by them at all times – to be better, to rise up and climb that ladder – has made me a better person in all regards.

Being the one teaching others is a great thing to do, but if you’re not challenging yourself and your ideas, thoughts, and processes – maybe it’s because you don’t want to be put in that position.

Perhaps you’re naturally gifted, and being at the top of the class was second-nature. Or perhaps your competitive edge or a self-esteem issue made you feel like you’ve always got to be at the top of the game, so you’ve never put yourself in a position where you’re the low man or woman on the totem pole.  But no matter how intelligent we are, you and I still don’t know everything there is to know, so we need to keep putting ourselves in positions where we can draw on the perspective, experience, and wisdom of others.

If you’re not doing this, you’re losing ground and wasting time.

You’ve got to put yourself out there and find tribes that challenge you and make you a better person.
